Winter Parka Care & Repair Guide: Cleaning, Storage and Small Damage

Proper care helps protect a winter parka’s insulation, shell, trim and overall appearance. The most important rule is to follow the care label on the individual garment and use Arctic Bay’s product-specific care guidance rather than assuming every winter jacket can be washed the same way.

Arctic Bay Cleaning Guidance

Arctic Bay currently recommends professional dry cleaning by a service experienced with down-insulated outerwear. Do not wash an Arctic Bay jacket in a regular washing machine unless the garment care label specifically instructs otherwise.

Remove Detachable Fur Before Cleaning

Where a garment has removable fur trim, remove it before professional cleaning. Fur type and removability vary by model, so check the individual product page and garment construction.

Fur Care

If fur becomes damp, Arctic Bay recommends shaking off moisture and allowing it to dry naturally in a cool, ventilated area. A fur-specific brush can be used gently in the direction of the hair. Avoid rubbing wet fur.

Spot Cleaning

For small areas of surface dirt, salt or staining, Arctic Bay recommends local spot cleaning where appropriate rather than unnecessary full cleaning. Always avoid aggressive chemicals or unverified treatments that could affect shell finishes, leather details or fur.

Drying After Snow or Moisture

If a parka becomes damp from normal winter use, allow it to air dry in a ventilated area before storage. Do not store the garment while wet.

Long-Term Storage

Store the parka clean and fully dry. Arctic Bay recommends using the provided garment bag to protect the coat’s appearance. Avoid long-term compression that can distort insulation or trim.

What to Do About a Small Tear

Small holes in down garments should be addressed promptly because continued wear can allow insulation to escape and the opening to grow. Patagonia’s current repair guidance advises working exposed down back inside rather than pulling it out and using a suitable repair method to close the hole.

Do Not Pull Out Emerging Down

If a feather or down cluster begins to work through a small opening, pulling it can enlarge the hole or draw more insulation through. Gently work it back inside where possible and arrange a suitable repair.

If a zipper begins to bind, do not force it. Check for trapped fabric or debris first. Hardware problems should be evaluated before they damage the surrounding shell or zipper tape.
