Zipper Technology in Winter Parkas: Types, Two-Way Zippers & Cold-Weather Function

A winter parka zipper is a functional part of the garment system. It affects how the coat opens, how easily you can move or sit, and how the front closure works with storm flaps, insulation and other cold-weather features.

Common Zipper Types

YKK groups zippers into three broad construction types: metal zippers, coil zippers and molded plastic zippers such as VISLON®. Each type has different characteristics and applications.

• Metal: individual metal elements attached to the zipper tape.
• Coil: flexible coil elements; YKK describes standard coil zippers as more flexible than metal or VISLON® styles.
• Molded plastic: injected plastic elements; YKK’s VISLON® line is a common example used in jackets and outdoor applications.

Why Two-Way Zippers Matter

A two-way front zipper can open from the bottom while remaining closed higher on the garment. On longer parkas, this can improve mobility while sitting, driving, walking or climbing stairs without fully opening the coat.

YKK identifies reverse-open designs as zippers that can separate normally and also open from the bottom.

Zipper Size and Strength

Zippers are produced in different sizes and constructions for different loads and applications. A larger or heavier zipper is not automatically “better”; the zipper needs to match the garment design, shell, opening length and intended use.

Water-Resistant Zippers Are Not the Same as Waterproof Garments

Some technical zippers use coated or engineered constructions intended to resist water. That does not automatically make the complete jacket waterproof. Seams, shell fabric, storm flaps and garment construction still matter.

Storm Flaps and Draft Control

A front zipper can be paired with an external or internal storm flap to reduce direct exposure through the centre-front opening. The exact closure system varies by product and should be confirmed on the individual product page.
