Winter Layering Guide: How to Dress Under a Parka
Сообщение от WEB MEDIA

A warm parka works best as part of a complete clothing system. The layers underneath affect moisture management, insulation and comfort, while the parka provides the outer layer of protection from cold, wind and snow.
The Three-Layer System
REI’s current cold-weather guidance organizes winter clothing into three functional layers:
- Base layer: manages moisture next to the skin.
- Mid layer: retains body heat.
- Outer layer: protects from wind and precipitation.
See REI’s Layering Basics and How to Dress in Cold Weather.
Base Layer: Moisture Management
The base layer sits next to the skin. Its main role is to move perspiration away from the body so moisture does not remain against the skin during cold-weather activity.
Common base-layer materials include synthetic fibres and merino wool. The best weight depends on temperature, activity level and personal comfort.
Mid Layer: Insulation
The mid layer helps retain body heat. Fleece, wool and lightweight insulated garments are common options. A highly active person may need less mid-layer insulation than someone standing still for long periods.
Outer Layer: The Parka
The parka forms the outer protective layer. Its insulation, shell, hood, cuffs, closures and length work together to reduce heat loss and protect from the environment.

Do You Always Need a Heavy Mid Layer?
No. Layering should respond to activity and weather. A highly insulated parka may require only a base layer and light mid layer during moderate activity, while lower activity or longer exposure may call for more insulation underneath.
Avoid Overheating
Too much insulation during activity can cause excessive perspiration. Moisture management is important because damp clothing can reduce comfort when activity slows or stops.
Fit Matters
A winter parka should allow enough room for intended layers without severely compressing the insulation. Use the Arctic Bay size guide and the individual product fit information when choosing a size.
Layering for Extreme Cold
For severe winter conditions, combine moisture management, appropriate mid-layer insulation and a parka with a verified cold-weather rating. Temperature ratings remain guidelines rather than guarantees of personal comfort.

Layering FAQ
Should a base layer be tight?
It should generally fit close enough to manage moisture effectively without restricting movement.
Can I wear cotton as a winter base layer?
For sustained cold-weather activity, moisture-managing synthetic or wool base layers are generally preferred because they manage perspiration more effectively.
How much room should a parka have for layers?
Enough for the intended base and mid layers without excessive compression or restricted movement.
